Amy Winehouse Dies: How Celebrities Are Exploited By Gossip
Opinion
The internet is loaded to the gills with web sites that exploit vulgarity and bad taste.
The recent tragic death of troubled British pop singer Amy Winehouse has brought out the usual condolences from a wide array of celebrities and ordinary people – however, due to her highly publicized problems with drugs and alcohol, some took a ghoulish delight in her self-destruction,
One of the most egregious examples of this is a Web site simply called “When will Amy Winehouse Die?”?
As of 3 p.m. (New York time), the site was still up and seemed to make a “game” out of predicting when she would die. The “prize” for the correct answer is an IPod Touch.
The principal message on the site reads: “We’ll all have a date with our maker someday, but Amy Winehouse just can’t seem to wait. She can write and sing a beautiful tune, but for some reason Amy has landed in a self-destruction derby. It is even rumoured that Amy and Pete [presumably British pop star Pete Doherty] are keeping the Colombian economy going. She simply looks like a cat’s a__hole before it’s been dewormed. Amy is on her way out and as the world is profiting from this decline we thought it only fair that you should profit from it too. Guess her final breath and be crowned Mr. or Mrs. Death. Winner will be rewarded with [an] iPod Touch.”
One can only assume that the prize reward has now been handed out and they will move onto the next troubled celebrity to bother and harass.
