‘Andi Mack’ Season 2 Introduces First Teen Gay Storyline; Breaks Network History
Disney Channel will be making history by introducing the first ever gay storyline on a teen show such as “Andi Mack.”
According to People, the storyline will be introduced in the Season 2 premiere of the show. Disney Channel released a statement to the network explaining their bold move.
“‘Andi Mack’ is a story about ‘tweens’ figuring out who they are. Terri Minsky, the cast and everyone involved in the show takes great care in ensuring that it’s appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity,” the statement read.
In the Season 2 premiere, Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) will be dealing with her feelings towards a boy. But her best friend, Cyrus (Joshua Rush), will also realize that he has feelings for the same boy. As the season progresses, Cyrus will come to terms with his sexuality with the help of his family and friends.
Meanwhile, the people behind “Andi Mack” reached out to experts to make sure that their portrayal of a gay teen is respectfully and appropriately done. Dr. Jaime M. Grant, executive director of PFLAG National also released a statement to the same publication.
“Sharing one’s innermost self can be challenging, and to do so as an adolescent can be particularly so, especially when in the midst of figuring it out for yourself. Coming out requires honest self-reflection, no small amount of bravery, and a safe place with at least one trusted person – a friend, a parent, a teacher – who can hold your confidence and your heart. ‘Andi Mack’s’ creative team captures this moment of revelation with such thought, care, and authenticity; it will be a memory moment for some, and a teachable moment for many,” she said.
“Andi Mack” premiered in March and instantly became a top series among young audiences in its timeslot. It is also dubbed as the top series on Disney Channel VOD, Disney Channel’s DisneyNow app and on Disney Channel UK, according to Deadline.
“Andi Mack” Season 2 will premiere on Disney Channel on Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. EDT.
