Andrew Garfield Reveals He Enjoyed Lying About His 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Role
Andrew Garfield has given Oscar-worthy performances every time he appeared in interviews last year, as he constantly denied his appearance in the "Spider-Man: No Way Home." Now, the actor has admitted he found the experience "weirdly enjoyable."
Garfield reprised his role as the superhero in the latest installment of the "Spider-Man" series, which takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He had spent major time of his 2021 vehemently denying his appearance in the movie so much so that his reactions had given birth to a meme-fest on social media.
Garfield revealed while talking to "The Wrap" how he enjoyed lying about his surprise appearance in the film.
"It was stressful, I’m not gonna lie. It was rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable. It was like this massive game of Werewolf that I was playing with journalists and with people guessing, and it was very fun. There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying.’ I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game. And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do."
He further added, "I placed myself in that position of, Well, what would I want to know? Would I want to be toyed with? Would I want to be lied to? Would I want to be kept on my toes guessing? Would I want to discover it when I went to the theatre? Would I want to be guessing, guessing, guessing? I would want the actor to do an incredibly good job at convincing me he wasn’t in it. And then I would want to lose my mind in the theatre when my instinct was proven right. That’s what I would want.”
Garfield was joined by his fellow actor Tobey Maguire, who has portrayed the web-slinger in the past in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Besides Maguire and Garfield, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" marked the return of multiple iconic villains from the older film series such as Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn.
The 38-year-old British actor first portrayed the superhero in “The Amazing Spider-Man” series, which sadly wasn’t that well-received both by the audience and critics, as many were of the opinion the film could not compete with Maguire’s version of “Spider-Man.” However, everyone had agreed Garfield’s performance was the only saving grace, and the release of “No Way Home” has generated renewed interest in his series.
