Angelina Jolie Started Acting Career To Help Mom Marcheline Bertrand Pay Bills
Angelina Jolie's acting career started out of necessity.
The "Maleficent" star is a daughter of two performers Marcheline Bertrand and Jon Voight. Despite her parents' career, Jolie admitted that she was not comfortable in front of the camera, but she fell into acting to help her mom financially, Daily Mail reported.
"I think, when I started acting, it was a good means to an end," Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was a job, and I wanted to help my mom with bills. It was a creative job, something where you get to explore different times in history, different people, different sides of yourself, learn different skills, so it's a wonderful job to have as you grow and as you learn as a person. But you also are not those people."
Jolie's mom passed away at 56. Bertrand succumbed to ovarian cancer. In 2015, the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" actress revealed that her mom wanted her ovaries to be removed too to keep her away from the same illness.
"We had some of the same nurses, some of the same doctors," Jolie told Us Weekly. "So, the doctor that did my ovary surgery was my mother's doctor. And apparently, my mother had said to her, 'Promise me you will take Angie's ovaries out.' So when we kind of got together, we both had a big cry, and she said, 'I promised your mother, and I've gotta do this.'"
On the podcast with THR, Jolie confessed that she is closer to her mom than her dad. In fact, the father and daughter were estranged for several years.
Voight accused the "Salt" star of having "serious mental problems." Meanwhile, Jolie fired back and criticized her dad for having an affair while still married to her mom. In 2011, Jolie and Voight reconcile. Since then Voight has been a good support for his daughter following his split from Brad Pitt.
"He's been very good at understanding they needed their grandfather at this time," Jolie said about her dad.
