Anthony Geary Says ‘General Hospital’ Writers Did ‘A Wonderful Job’ On His Final Episode
Even though viewers still have some time left with him, Anthony Geary has officially said goodbye to “General Hospital.” The actor filmed his last episode of the ABC soap opera on Tuesday after 37 years on the show.
“I’m excited to raise the curtain on act 3, to reinvent myself in my new home to pursue whatever opportunity there may be. It’s an exciting prospect to me,” Geary told Entertainment Weekly. “They’ve done a wonderful job of wrapping up the character. So this seems like the ideal time to go.”
Geary’s retirement certainly isn’t being taken lightly. His character Luke’s exit brought back several actors who left the show, including “Nashville” star Jonathan Jackson and “The Originals” actor Nathan Parsons, who play his sons. His onscreen love Laura, played by Genie Francis, will also return.
“Thank you for the best acting partnership I’ve ever known,” Francis told Geary on his last day.
Their onscreen wedding was an epic event that drew in more than 30 million viewers. Yet, Geary is sick of talking about his fiction nuptials. “It was 33 years ago, people,” Geary said. “For Christ’s sake, let it go.”
Still, viewers will get one last epic story with Luke and Laura before Geary’s goodbye episode airs later this summer. The exes have reunited to find Lucky (Jackson) after he was kidnapped. Francis teased a little bit about her final episodes with Geary.
“It’s going to be another Luke-and-Laura adventure,” she told TVLine. “There will be many fan favorites that we’ll touch on. I think it’s going to be a really nice bookend piece for the fans… I think it’s a crowd-pleaser.”
Francis also assured viewers that she and Geary were getting along during his final episodes, despite rumors that the two aren’t close. “I would say that we’re getting along beautifully and that we’re both enjoying this time very, very much. … Don’t tell me anybody who’s had 38 years together [hasn’t had] a couple of run-ins with each other,” Francis told The Wrap. “If they’re saying they didn’t, they’re full of s---. So yeah, we’re doing very well with each other now, and there’s a lot of love and a lot of good feelings about this ending.”
