Anthony Mackie Says ‘Falcon And Winter Soldier’ Has More ‘Budget Constraints’ Than Marvel Movies
Anthony Mackie is finally stepping into a starring role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being handed Captain America’s shield, he’ll star in Disney+’s “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” TV show, but there’s one big difference between Marvel Studios' limited series and films—money.
During Variety’s Actors on Actors segments with the Sam Wilson actor and “Snowpiercer” star Daveed Diggs, Mackie revealed that “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” doesn’t have the luxury of shooting for as long as they’d like.
“It was really amazing just because I feel like we’re the first Marvel show or movie that had budget constraints,” he commented. “And that was always my [experience], ‘It’s Marvel, we could shoot forever.’ And they’re like, ‘Nah.’ So it was a very different experience from the rest of the movies. But at the same time, it was a lot of fun.”
Variety reports that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” isn’t cheap. At $150 million, the first Marvel Studios TV show has a huge price tag, but that still doesn’t compete with the typical Marvel movie budget of $350 million.

While the Marvel series, which also stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, is working with a TV budget, they are still filming much like it’s going to the big screen.
“We’re shooting it exactly like a movie,” Mackie added. “Everybody who had worked on TV before was like, ‘I’ve never worked on a TV show like this.’ The way in which we were shooting, it feels exactly like we were shooting the movie cut up into the show. So instead of a two-hour movie, a six or eight-hour movie.”
Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” was set to release on Disney+ in August, but it is expected that the premiere will be delayed. Production was still a few weeks away from finishing when the global health crisis brought everything to a halt.
