Anthony Russo Defends Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 Quality: 'They're Being Experimental'
Anthony Russo, who directed "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame" alongside his brother Joe Russo, has addressed the fans' criticism surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 4.
During an interview with NBC News on Tuesday, Anthony was asked about Marvel fans calling out "Thor: Love and Thunder" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" on social media, saying the movies were not meeting their expectations in terms of quality content.
"The entire life of the MCU has seen ups and downs, there’s going to naturally be an ebb and flow to how people are feeling about it based on the latest offering," Anthony said.
He went on to praise the MCU for their way of approaching the storytelling process, and being "experimental" with their Phase 4 content.
"But I think — look, at the end of the day, they’re still being very ambitious in terms of how they approach the storytelling. They’re being experimental," he said. "They’re looking for new forms of expression to keep audiences excited and surprised."
Despite the backlash from the Marvel fans, Anthony said he hasn’t lost faith in the MCU.
"It still seems like they have a vital creative code and process that they’re pursuing, so I do believe there’s still a lot of hope for what’s possible in the MCU," he concluded. "We haven’t lost faith in it, that’s for sure."
"Thor: Love and Thunder," which was dropped earlier this month, has been receiving some bashing online. One of the fans took to Twitter on Tuesday to share how the Marvel comic books have shown Gorr's character, whereas the movie has presented the impact of Gorr's character on Thor.
Another fan also shared a quick review of the movie that suggested how fans should not use their brains while watching the movie.
Many more tweets suggested the same.
Considering Marvel Studios' upcoming movies, fans will be treated with "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" this November, while "The Marvels" and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" are slated to release next year.
Joe and Anthony's upcoming projects include TV series, "Citadel" and a movie, titled "The Electric State."
