'Apex Legends': Here's What's Coming In 'Defiance' Update
KEY POINTS
- The "Defiance" update will add a new champion, a revamped map and a new limited-time mode
- "Control" is a new 9v9 mode inspired by the traditional "Domination" game mode
- "Defiance" goes live on Feb. 8
The third anniversary of “Apex Legends” is getting closer, and it’s about to bring a big new update with plenty of fun content for everyone to enjoy.
There’s more to the upcoming “Defiance” update than just a new playable legend. Here’s everything that Respawn is cooking up for the anniversary celebration.
New Legend: Mad Maggie
Players who have been around since the earlier seasons of “Apex Legends” may recognize Maggie as an announcer. This time, fans will get to know Maggie a little more intimately as she enters the Apex Games as a playable character.
As of writing, not much is known about Mad Maggie’s kit. However, the animated trailer for the “Defiance” update may hold some hints on how she’ll play out in the game.
Based on the trailer, Maggie carries a special pistol that can fire a special dart that can spew what looks like thermite through obstacles. She also gets covered in a menacing red aura whenever she’s in combat, which may be a reference to her passive ability.
More information about Maggie is expected to be revealed once the gameplay trailer for “Defiance” is released.
Limited Time Mode: Control
This upcoming game mode might just be the most exciting addition in the new season. Control is a 9v9 game mode where teams fight over control points in chaotic matches with unlimited respawns. On paper, this game mode seems to be Respawn’s take on the traditional “Domination” game mode from other FPS games.
Players will be able to pick their own loadouts when playing Control, which could result in some very interesting matches depending on whether or not there are limitations to what weapons can be selected.
New Olympus Update
The fan-favorite Olympus map is getting updated once again, although the specific details are still murky as of writing. Based on the “Defiance” trailer, players can expect a new area with a large phase generator that could create teleport zones or some sort of environment-altering effect.
Free Champions and Apex Packs
Lastly, players will be able to get Octane, Wattson and Valkyrie for free just by logging into the game during the first few weeks of “Defiance’s” launch. This will include some extra freebies like Apex Packs and other cosmetics, so be sure to have the game installed and updated once Feb. 8 arrives.
