Apple Discontinuing iPhone XR LCD Model As Company Preps More OLED Devices?
Apple will reportedly stop producing iPhone XR LCD models. This move will give way for the company’s transition into creating more OLED iPhone models next year. Here’s what we know about this development.
According to Digitimes, insiders said that Apple is planning to introduce three new iPhone devices by 2020. These new iPhones will come in different sizes: 5.42 inches, 6.06 inches and 6.67 inches. And the upcoming smartphones will also be made with OLED screens rather than the usual LCD that Apple has used over the years.
Apple reportedly obtained the OLED screens from Samsung. While the OLED move is a definite upgrade to the technology, Apple seems to have a way to make this cheaper.
The 2020 iPhones could use Samsung’s Y-Octa or LG’s TOE touch technology, which are both upgrades to the devices but also won’t cause the smartphones' prices to skyrocket.
As of now, the latest version of the iPhone X generation, the iPhone XR, still uses LCD screens and costs around $799 to $899, depending on its storage version. While the OLED price cut doesn't exactly promise that the next iPhones will be budget-friendly, it’ll at least keep the price range somewhat near the current iPhone XR.
There is also a possibility that Apple could actually sell the next iPhone at a cheaper price due to the new OLED technology.
Last month, Apple announced some details about the devices the company is planning to release this 2019. Most of the announcements were about the new services that Apple is offering this year, but none were about the 2019 iPhone release. Since not many details are known about the next iPhone, we’ll have to wait for a further announcements to see what technology Apple will use on this upcoming device.
However, Apple is known to hold large events during specific months of every year, which means we can expect more details soon. In the latter half of 2019, Apple will have more than two major events which could unveil more information about the next iPhone.
