Apple has unveiled its latest service for health- and fitness-conscious consumers, Fitness+. The new service, which is designed to work alongside the Apple Watch to help users live healthier, more active lifestyles, will be arriving soon.
The new Apple Fitness+ requires an Apple Watch to work. It offers a slew of workout videos that subscribers can watch and follow and uses the Apple Watch to acquire metrics and inform users about their progress. The result is a first-of-its-kind personalized workout experience meant to meet the needs of users, beginners and experienced health buffs alike.
Here's what fans should know about the new exercise service.
Workout videos
Fitness+ gives subscribers a lot of workout videos to choose from. These videos can be viewed via the Fitness app on the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. While the new Fitness app replaces the iPhone's Activity app, it's a totally new app for the iPad and Apple TV.
Categories
Users have a variety of workout styles to choose from. These include Core, Cycling, Dance, HIIT, Rowing, Strength, Treadmill Walk, Treadmill Run, Yoga and Mindful Cooldown.
Apple said it will release new workout videos each week so that users will have new exercises to follow. Users are free to choose from any category they like.
Workout Equipment
Apple Fitness+ will not require subscribers to buy expensive workout equipment. In fact, many of the workout routines will not require any equipment at all.
Apple said some exercises will only require a basic set of dumbbells. Users are free to use any necessary workout equipment, such as treadmills, if they have one at home.
Apple Watch integration
Users will be able to monitor their progress using the Apple Watch, which will monitor their movements, workout duration, number of calories burned, heart rate and more. These stats will also be shown on the screen they are using to view the workout videos (iPhone, iPad or Apple TV).
Custom exercises
Apple Fitness+ offers different skill levels for all users. It will allow for workout modifications so that users will have the exercise they need. Users can also set the duration or length of the workout.
Summary
Fitness+ will also provide users with a summary of their workout metrics after the fitness routine. This will allow users to review how they fared during the workout.
Apple will offer Fitness+ for $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year. The service will be released before the end of the year.
