KEY POINTS

  • Fans continue to wait for Apple's next flagship lineup
  • The devices are expected to have new and enhanced features, as well as a different look
  • The devices are delayed, however, according to an expert

Apple fans are looking forward to the time when the company unveils its new flagships meant to outperform its current handsets. The devices, all expected to belong to the iPhone 12 lineup, are expected to feature better specs compared to the iPhone 11 series, as well as the newly launched 2020 iPhone SE.

Here's what the new devices might feature when they are released, based on rumors and leaks on the internet.

A redesigned look

Previous reports indicate that the iPhone 12 series of handsets will feature a look significantly different from the iPhone 11 series. Noted TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo once said the new lineup will feature a “similar design to the iPhone 4.” This, of course, might mean it won't feature edges as rounded as the current models.

Apple Insider noted that according to rumors and leaks, the new iPhone 12 lineup might look like a “smaller iPad Pro,” which means it will look just like how Kuo described it: sleek flat edges made of metal. Those who want to have a good look at it will want to see these renders from SvetApple.

A new processor

Reports indicate that Apple is already ordering 5nm chips from TSMC. These chips are believed to be the new A14 Bionic, which will be used in the iPhone 12 series. Geekbench testing reveals that the A14 is way more powerful than Cupertino's existing silicon used in its handsets, and is even powerful enough to overtake the 2018 iPad Pro in terms of single-core and multi-core scores.

A smaller notch

Leaks also reveal that the new iPhone 12 series could feature smaller notches as compared to the ones on the iPhone X down to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. This information is based on leaked images that appear to have been taken from a manual.

A new LiDAR scanner

The same leaker who leaked about the notch being smaller on the new series also leaked images of the new lineup's rear camera setup. The images show a four-camera setup, arranged in a square-like position inside the rear camera module. The fourth camera looks like the LiDAR scanner similar to what Apple placed on the new iPad Pro.

Support for 5G

The new iPhone 12 series of handsets are expected to feature support for 5G, both sub-6GHz and mmWave. They are also expected to feature new connectivity features like Wi-Fi 802.11ay.

These are but some of the things the new lineup might feature. That said, Apple hasn't officially announced anything yet, which means fans should take all of them with a grain of salt. Kuo believes the devices, especially the mmWave model, are delayed due to COVID-19.
