Apple, Samsung Continue To Dominate US Smartphone Market In Q4 2013, Comprising More Than Two-Thirds Of The Market
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) remained the top smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. for the 2013 December quarter, while Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating system ranked as the leading smartphone platform during the same period, according to a new report from comScore (NASDAQ:SCOR).
The report said market shares of both Apple and Samsung (KRX:005935) increased 1.2 percent during the three-month period, with the duo combining for more than two-thirds of the U.S. smartphone market. While Apple accounted for 41.8 percent of the market, Samsung’s share increased to 26.1 percent since September. Motorola, LG and HTC rounded out the top five with a combined market share of 19 percent.
“156 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (65.2 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in December, up 3.2 percent since September,” the report said.
In terms of operating systems, Android topped the chart in the December quarter with a 51.5 percent share of the market, down 0.3 percentage points since September. Apple’s iOS remained at the second spot with 41.8 percent, up 1.2 percentage points. Apple’s share grew largely at the expense of Android and BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) with a 3.4 percent market share, down 0.4 percentage points from September.
Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Mobile has failed to gain any traction over the past three months, dropping 0.2 percentage points from 3.3 percent to 3.1 percent of the overall U.S. market.
The comScore report also ranked Google-owned sites as the top Web property on smartphones, reaching 88.3 percent of the mobile media audience (mobile browsing and app usage), followed by Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Yahoo-owned (NASDAQ:YHOO) sites and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) sites.
Among the smartphone apps, Facebook ranked as the No. 1 app, reaching 77.4 percent of the app audience, followed by Google Play (53.9 percent), Google Search (49.7 percent) and Pandora Radio (48.7 percent).
