Elon Musk Wants To Give Every American Child A SpaceX Share. The Giveaway Could Be Worth Over $10 Billion.
The billionaire plans to begin distributing shares in 2027 but has not explained eligibility rules or how families would receive the stock.

Elon Musk said he plans to give every child in the U.S. one share of SpaceX next year, a pledge that could be worth approximately $10.6 billion based on the company's Monday share price.
The SpaceX founder and CEO announced the plan during the weekend, noting that the giveaway would begin in 2027.
"Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many," Musk said.

This will be the first of many.
Musk did not explain how the shares would be distributed, who would qualify or whether eligibility would depend on U.S. citizenship. With more than 72 million children under 18 living in the United States, the proposal could involve at least 72 million SpaceX shares.
At Monday's market price of $148.63 at 10:11 a.m. ET, a distribution of 72 million shares would be valued at approximately $10.7 billion. The final amount would depend on the number of eligible children and the stock price when the transfers take place.
Musk has not specified whether the shares would come directly from his personal holdings or through another arrangement, such as a trust. He also has not announced an application process or explained whether children would receive the stock directly or through custodial accounts.
The billionaire holds a substantial stake in SpaceX, including shares held through trusts under his control. An SEC ownership filing submitted in June listed hundreds of millions of Class A shares held indirectly through Musk-controlled trusts, along with significant Class B holdings.
The filing also detailed restricted stock tied to performance conditions, including market capitalization milestones and progress on the company's long-term projects.
SpaceX went public in June under the ticker SPCX, pricing its initial public offering at $135 a share, according to its SEC-filed offering materials.
Musk's proposal follows an earlier pledge by SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell and her husband to give one SpaceX share to each of more than 2 million children through Trump Accounts, a tax-advantaged savings program established under federal legislation in 2025.
At Monday's premarket price, 2 million shares would be worth approximately $294 million. Musk has not indicated whether his proposed giveaway would use the same program or a separate arrangement.
The announcement also followed a public exchange involving artificial intelligence company Anthropic, which announced Sunday that it planned to allocate 5% of its shares to a fund supporting initiatives addressing AI's effects on society.
Musk responded on X by suggesting that companies distribute shares directly to the public, a day before announcing his own SpaceX proposal.
