The war for the best in-ear wireless earbuds wages on as Google recently debuted its under $100 Google Pixel Buds A-Series, while Apple teased its AirPods Pro 2 getting a fitness tracking feature.
A recent report revealed Apple's next premium in-ear wireless earbuds may feature fitness tracking capabilities -- a first in the wireless earbuds segment. Speculations about this new feature surfaced following Tech Crunch's interview with Apple's vice president of technology Kevin Lynch.
The executive mentioned there was a "potential" for the AirPods to "explore" sensor fusion. For the uninitiated, sensor fusion is the process of combing sensor data from several devices to offer more accurate health and fitness tracking data. During the interview, he was asked if AirPods could be among those that would be included in the system, to which Lynch said, "We already do sensor fusion across some devices today, and I think there’s all kinds of potential here."
It is possible that the AirPods 3 could feature onboard health monitoring, but the sensor fusion could land on the AirPods Pro 2. Bloomberg had previously reported Apple's AirPods Pro 2 would feature improved sensors and more focused fitness tracking capability.
However, the upcoming Apple AirPods Pro 2's latest rival is the Google Pixel Buds A-Series. Google recently released its affordable Pixel Buds A-Series, which is now available at various retailers in the U.S. for only $99. The search engine giant's latest offering, which was launched a couple of weeks ago, screams affordability, and is the stripped-down version of the 2020 Pixel Buds.
Consumers can choose between Olive and White models, and can order them at their favorite retailers, and other mortar and brick stores. According to Google, the latest Pixel Buds A-Series features the same audio output as the 2020 Pixel Buds, but at a much lesser price.
The company claimed the new wireless earbuds solved the connection issues of its predecessor, particularly in areas with high interference, 9to5Google reported. Additionally, the device offered five hours of listening and 2.5 hours of calls in just a single charge.
