KEY POINTS

  • Apple hasn't released a 5G iPhone yet, but fans believe it will
  • Analysts predict at least three 5G iPhones next year
  • Apple's 5G iPhone will also feature better specs compared to this year's flagships

Fans and analysts expect Apple to release a 5G-capable iPhone next year. Cupertino, however, hasn't officially said anything about it yet. What can consumers expected from the tech giant?

Consumers expected Apple to release a 5G-capable iPhone this year, but were disappointed to see three new iPhones with new cameras and a new chip but with no support for 5G. Now that that iPhone 11 lineup is out, fans are looking forward to iPhone models with support for the new network.

MacRumors reported that there are several rumors suggesting Apple will release a 5G handset next year, since 5G already exists but the current flagships still support LTE. The company might not be able to release a 5G-capable handset this year, but it is likely to release one next year since 2021 is still far out and rival companies have already released theirs.

Several analysts have predicted that Apple will release not just one 5G-capable handset next year. JP Morgan's analysts expect four 5G-capable iPhones in 2020, all of them in varying sizes: the smallest one will have a display that measures 5.4 inches, two handsets will feature 6.1-inch displays, and the largest will have a 6.7-inch display.

Jun Zhang from Rosenblatt, on the other hand, predicted that Apple will release as much as six iPhones next year, and three of these will have support for 5G. According to him, the smallest will be the iPhone 12 Pro 5G with a 5.4-inch LCD screen and will feature dual cameras. Next will be the iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G with a 6.1-inch OLED screen, triple camera setup and Time of Flight features.

Interestingly, Zhang claimed that Apple will also release an iPhone 12 Pro Plus with a 6.1-inch OLED display, triple camera setup, and Time of Flight features as well. The Max and Plus models might sound similar on paper, but it's still too early to conclude anything about these devices. Furthermore, Zhang's predictions are just predictions, and so it's best to wait for Apple to make announcements.

Previous reports reveal that Apple's next iPhone lineup could feature bigger batteries, better camera setups, and could be bundled with AirPods when purchased.
