‘Archie’ Comic Book Writer Mark Waid Teases Betty Cooper’s Fate; How Will It Affect Future Stories?
“Archie” comics’ three-part “Over the Edge” storyline recently wrapped up with a massive revelation regarding Betty Cooper.
Previously, there were speculations that the character will be killed off after being involved in a car crash. However, the final installment in the series confirmed that she is alive, but has been left paralyzed by the accident. “Archie” writer Mark Waid recently explained to Entertainment Weekly what Betty’s paralysis would mean for the character and her group of friends.
“The whole town of Riverdale has turned upside down by Betty Cooper’s fate. Because Betty truly is the heart of Riverdale, her fate has major repercussions. Friends will become enemies, romances will shatter, and, as always, Archie will get his head stuck in a paint bucket at some point. It’s not all doom and gloom,” he said.

Meanwhile, Waid and his team will release another “Archie” comic book in August that will center on Betty. In fact, the writer hinted on the possibility of edition 23 being titled “The Heart of Riverdale.” A cover photo of the upcoming comic book has also been released exclusively via Entertainment Weekly.
However, if Betty has been paralyzed in the comic book series, the same cannot be said of the Betty in The CW series, “Riverdale.” Played by actress Lili Reinhart, Betty will continue to fight for her relationship with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) in Season 2.
There are also some speculations suggesting that she will meet her long-lost brother in the upcoming episodes. While speaking with TV Line in May, executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was asked whether or not Betty’s brother will be featured in the series. “I wouldn’t be surprised and that’s all I’ll say about that,” he replied.
In Season 1, Betty’s mom, Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick), confessed to her that she gave up her first child several years before Polly (Tiera Skovbye) and Betty were born. Since Betty likes doing detective work, she will most likely go on a mission of finding her brother. A fan theory recently linked the MIA character to Kevin’s (Casey Cott) boyfriend, Joaquin (Rob Raco).
“Riverdale” Season 2 will premiere on The CW on Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. EDT.
