Ariana Grande has been cast as Glinda the good witch in Jon M. Chu’s upcoming musical film adaptation of “Wicked.”
The singer confirmed Thursday she will portray the role of Glinda, opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba. Grande took to Instagram to share a photo of her Zoom call with her co-star and director, writing “Thank goodness.”
She also shared a photo of the flowers Erivo sent her, which included a letter that read, “’Pink goes good with green.’ Congratulations Miss A, the part was made for you, I look forward to sharing this musical journey with you.”
In return, the “Thank U, Next” singer sent Erivo a bouquet of white and green flowers. “Dear Cynthia, honored doesn’t even begin to cover it. I cannot wait to hug you. See you in Oz,” she wrote in her note.
Erivo also took to her Instagram page to share the good news, writing the same quote she sent to her co-star. Her post earned congratulatory messages from her Broadway friends, including Anthony Ramos, who commented with a string of fire emojis.
Meanwhile, Grande’s mom gushed over her daughter’s new achievement and commented on her Instagram post: “Bursting with pride!!!!!! Thank goodness.”
Before Grande and Erivo nabbed the roles, several other celebrities had campaigned for the roles of the dueling witches in the popular tale, including Amanda Seyfried.
During the Variety’s Award Circuit podcast in April, Seyfried revealed she sent Chu a recording of herself singing the song “Popular” as she auditioned for the role. “I’ve never been more ready to hit those notes,” she tweeted at the time, before adding Samantha Barks was her bet for the role of Elphaba.
“There’s nobody else like Samantha Barks,” she wrote. “Samantha is my No. 1, I mean, there’s no better singer in the world I think,” she added.
Seyfriend also said Anna Kendrick was her second pick for the role, although she noted Anne Hathaway could also be perfect. “At one point, it was Anne Hathaway, too. She could obviously be Elphaba,” she wrote.
