Some drivers on the San Diego freeway could face criminal charges after taking cash when the door of an armored truck popped open and money began flying out.

The incident took place on Friday around 9:15 a.m. when California California Highway Patrol (CHP) began receiving calls that money was scattered along Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, California.

Drivers began pulling over to grab the cash and caused a major traffic jam. While some may have thought it was their lucky break ahead of Black Friday, the CHP and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a statement advising those individuals to return the money or face potential criminal charges.

“Many of the motorists returned the money immediately to the officers; however, there were motorists observed driving from the scene with stolen money,” the agencies said in a joint press release.

“The CHP would like to thank those motorists who have already returned money to their local CHP office and remind the public to do the right thing and return any money they found on the freeway.”

The armored truck incident resulted in the shutdown of the northbound side of Interstate 5 so authorities could collect the money. At least two people were handcuffed after locking their keys in their cars and blocking traffic.

“There was cash all over the freeway,” a CHP spokesperson said. “People stopped in the lanes, completely blocked the lanes, started picking up the cash.”

Thanks to social media, authorities have found photos and videos of the license plate numbers of cars and people that stopped to grab money. The agencies have also released images of people grabbing cash.

The incident continues to be investigated by the CHP and FBI.
