  • David Luiz bounces back after being criticized for his performance
  • The Arsenal player proved his detractors wrong by winning over the same team he had a woeful performance playing against
  • Luiz says Arsenal will not relax and will stay humble despite the club's win over Manchester City

David Luiz has been around long enough to know that there will be bad games coming his way. That happened when Arsenal FC returned to action after the COVID-19 break. He was criticized for his lapses in their match back in June against Manchester City FC but ironically redeemed himself against the same club on Saturday.

Luiz played the full 90 minutes and was instrumental in Arsenal's 2-0 win over the Sky Blues. With the quick turnaround in performance, Luiz was able to redeem himself emphatically. A good performance was the only way to prove his detractors wrong.

Luiz has admitted that criticism is part of football but maintained that he has kept his head in the game, BT Sport reported.

"It is part of the football. I understood that football is about surviving. Every day you are going to defend the odd thing," Luiz said. "We have a final to play this season and we will try and win a title for this club because this club deserves to win a trophy."

Despite the win, Luiz added that they need to stay humble, with the club still a work in progress. It was a big win, but more work needs to be done. And for as long as they stay the course, the Brazilian center-back believes their efforts will yield positive results.

"We have to be mature, to understand what level we are at in the process. We have an amazing coach but we can't go from 0 to 100. We are improving. The spirit was great and I'm happy for the team because they deserve it," Luiz said.

Luiz received his fair share of criticism, particularly when he signed a new one-year deal. The 33-year-old player had originally fancied a two-year pact, a pitch likely to tied to the fact that he is not getting any younger. Regardless, both sides settled for a one-year deal instead.

As previously reported, the Gunners' decision to re-sign Luiz left former Arsenal and Tottenham player David Bentley puzzled. He questioned how the Brazilian would fit in the youth and winning mentality that Mikel Arteta was trying to enforce at Emirates Stadium.

But with his recent performance, Luiz somehow proved that he is still committed to winning. The only question that remains now is how long that will last.
