Arsenal Transfer News: Ozil's Agent Confirms Exit Talks; Gunners Not In The Loop
KEY POINTS
- Mesut Ozil could leave Arsenal during the January transfer window
- His agent will now start to potential suitors
- Ozil has not played for Arsenal since March 2020
The Mesut Ozil-Arsenal saga looks to be nearing its conclusion after the midfielder’s agent Dr. Erkut Sogut confirmed that his client’s future could be decided in the next 10 days.
The German World Cup winner is now free to talk to clubs outside of England after entering the final six months of his contract and has attracted interest from teams in the United States, Turkey and Qatar.
The Gunners are keen to unload Ozil with his $476,000 weekly salary after Mikel Arteta omitted the attacking midfielder from his English Premier League and Europa League lineups for the first half of the season.
A recent report suggested that DC United reached out to Ozil about a potential move to the United States, with an offer to help promote his M10 clothing brand.
Fenerbahce was also thought to be close to landing Ozil this month--with reports in Turkey suggesting that they had reached a three-year deal with him.
However, his manager made it clear that no decision has been made with regards to Ozil’s future while admitting that there is a possibility he will leave Arsenal before the end of January.
“We were not allowed to talk legally before Jan. 1, so now we are just starting to look at the options with the numbers and details," Sogut told ESPN. "I can't talk about the clubs directly because it would be unprofessional. But generally, there are six months left on the contract and it is nothing unusual that we will talk to people about different opportunities and try to find the best option for Mesut.”
"He might stay at Arsenal until the summer, but he might go. Mesut's priority is to stay. But you never know in football. Things can change very fast. At the moment, we are just checking all the options for January and the summer,” he continued. "If we want to leave in January, I need to talk to Arsenal. If we sign for the summer, we don't need to. That's the situation. In the next seven to ten days, it will be a little clearer as now the transfer window is open, things can move faster."
Ozil has not played for the club since March of last year but has been given hope by Arteta that the situation can change.
According to ESPN's report, the Gunners confirmed that they have yet to sit down with Ozil and his agent.
