‘Avengers: Endgame’ Audiences Question Why A Certain Goodbye Was Missing
“Avengers: Endgame” was the end of the line for several of our heroes, so if you haven’t seen it yet, turn around. This is about a major character death, and massive spoilers are ahead.
In order to get the soul stone, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) had to sacrifice herself. After fighting with Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) until she fell to her death, the archer was given the soul stone.
She wasn’t the only original Avenger to lose her life. Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) died during the final battle.
However, only one of them had a funeral scene. Everyone, even Harley (Ty Simpkins) from “Iron Man 3,” gathers for Tony’s goodbye. While there is a scene where the Avengers mourn Natasha, and Professor Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) even says he tried to bring her back using the Infinity Stones, there isn’t a real funeral.
The lack of ceremony made many fans angry. Some feel it was a moment that would have given closure, while others note that the lack of funeral is indicative of how Marvel has treated the Black Widow character.
Was there a funeral? Did Clint bring her body back to Earth? When did they tell all the returned Avengers about her sacrifice?
Despite being three action-packed hours long, some fans felt that “Avengers: Endgame” seemed to cut the actual ending short. Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) fans questioned why he didn’t get more than a couple of seconds of a reunion with Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans). Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) wasn’t really given enough time to shine to make it clear that he’d be Cap’s choice replacement. There wasn’t much mention of Vision (Paul Bettany), who seems to be actually dead despite his role in the upcoming “Wandavision” show on Disney+.
There was only so much that Marvel could fit into a three-hour movie, so it seems inevitable that some things would be overlooked.
“Avengers: Endgame” is in theaters now.
