'Awkward' Star Monty Geer Discusses Major Changes In Season 5, Reveals What's In Store For Theo And Cole
The fifth and final season of MTV’s “Awkward” is officially here and, according to one of the show’s stars, a big change is in store for the Palos Hills High crew. Monty Geer, who plays Cole on the series, gave International Business Times the exclusive scoop on what’s in store for his character and the rest of the gang, as well as what viewers can expect as the show wraps.
According to Geer, Season 5 will be full of shake ups as a majority of the cast prepares to head off to college. Relationships -- and friendships -- will be tested as both lovers and close friends are forced to decide whether they'll stay together or call it quits. Geer told IBT that Season 5 is going to be a tough time for he and his other half, Theo (Evan Crooks). While he couldn't reveal much about the pair, which he described as a "dynamic duo," he did tell us that there is going to be trouble in paradise.
"Theo and Cole -- we have the same pranks going on [this season] like, an episode we just did, there's a senior prank and we kind of throw a huge prank at the end and are judging everyone else's pranks," he revealed. "Then we get our own drama, too. Maybe I start dating someone else, maybe I don't. I don't know."
They won't be the only ones put to the test as "Awkward" takes it's final bow. Geer said a majority of the season will focus on the on-again, off-again relationship between main characters Matty McKibben (Beau Mirchoff) and Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards). The actor said "Season 5 [will be] the biggest time for Matty and Jenna." The couple, who have survived a lot in previous seasons, will be faced with a tough decision: do they get back together or put a stop to their high school romance for good?
"More than any other season it definitely focuses around what's going to happen with [Matty and Jenna] because they're both graduating," he said. "They really want to be together, you can tell, but there's just so much conflict pulling people apart. I hope they get together. I'm a huge Matty and Jenna fan."
As far as the series coming to a close, Geer said it's been a sad time for the entire cast. Although Cole was only introduced in Season 4, he is incredibly sad to see him go. Geer told IBT that his "Awkward" role is "one of the most creative characters" he's ever taken on and, as such, saying goodbye won't be easy. What's more, fans have really taken to Cole in the short time he's been on the show. Geer revealed that, despite being "unpredictable and wild," Cole has largely been a favorite among "Awkward" viewers.
"Losing him is really tough. He's been so much fun," Geer shared. "A lot of people think [Theo and Cole] are really funny and have a lot of really great moments. Of course, there are a lot of people that don't like us and probably think we're loud and obnoxious and would rather just watch Matty and Jenna just kiss and stuff."
Fortunately for Geer, he hasn't had a lot of time to think about "Awkward" ending. The actor is gearing up for an appearance in a film, called "The Adventures of Sam Wolf." In it, he plays Max Wolf, Sam's (Ian Wallentine) older brother. Rather than facing the trials and tribulations of high school life like he does on MTV, Geer's character is forced to take on a challenge not often explored in TV or film: disability. He shared with IBT that his character winds up blind, which eventually bonds he and his brother together. Geer will also be appearing in a forthcoming episode of "Adam Ruins Everything."
MTV's "Awkward" airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT.
