Backpacker Falls 100 Feet To Her Death From Clifftop Selfie Spot In Australia
A British model-cum-backpacker plunged to her death Sunday from a 30 meter (100 ft) high cliff in Sydney, Australia.
Madalyn Davis, 21, from Lincoln, England, moved to Australia last year in order to settle there. She went to the Diamond Bay cliffs in Vaucluse at 2:30 p.m. EST (6:30 a.m. local time) on Sunday with seven friends. She was reportedly sitting on a fence located at the edge of the cliff to watch the sunrise before her fall. She was in a party in Vaucluse the previous night, Mirror reported.
Diamond Bay cliffs are often thronged by tourists for taking selfies. New South Wales police said in a statement that emergency services, including Pol Air and the Marine Area Command immediately responded to the scene. Her body was retrieved from the water below four hours later, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Davis’ mother, Rebecca Smith, had earlier posted an online appeal for her friends Sunday to help track her down. “Anyone seen Maddie? Not been able to get hold of her please get in touch if you were out with her last night,” she wrote. Davis’ family, however, confirmed her death Monday morning.
Davis’ friends described her as a “free spirit” who was “beautiful inside and out” in their online tributes.
"You were an incredibly beautiful model and talented artist giving so much colour to the world ... you were so fun to be with that so many people have so many great stories and memories they tell about you. You will be so very sorely missed. Thinking of your family and close friends in this devastating time ... I hope all the koalas and kangaroos are looking after you," one person wrote.
"I really don't know how to process this Maddie, last time we saw each other was three years ago and now you are gone," wrote another.
Davis’ family members thanked her friends for their kind words. “Thank you for all your beautiful condolences for Madalyn Davis and her family - it is an absolute tragedy to which nothing has been confirmed,” one of the family members wrote.
Police were investigating her death. "An investigation is underway. A report will be prepared for the coroner," police said in a statement.
