BAFTAs 2020: Sam Mendes' '1917' Nabs 7 Trophies, 'Joker' Takes Home 3

Sam Mendes’ war-epic “1917” is creating all the right buzz before the Academy Awards will be handed out on Feb. 9 in Los Angeles. The movie won a staggering seven trophies at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), including Best Picture.
According to the organization, Mendes took home the Best Director trophy for the movie and made the Oscars race even more interesting. The helmer faced stiff competition from the likes of Marin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), Todd Phillips (“Joker”), Bong Joon-Ho (“Parasite”) and Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”).
Other notable wins for the movie came in the categories like Visual Effects, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound and Outstanding British Film.
“Joker” turned out to be another major winner at the star-studded ceremony. The movie won three trophies, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. This is Phoenix’s fifth major award after winning a Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, a Screen Actors Guild Award and London Film Critics Circle awards for the movie.
The star is considered to be a frontrunner at the Academy Awards, which will take place next month.
He will be running for the trophy with the likes of Jonathan Pryce (“The Two Popes”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”), Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”) and Antonio Banderas (“Pain And Glory”).
The movie also won Best Original Score and Best Casting awards.
Meanwhile, Renee Zellweger continued her winning streak at the BAFTAs and took home the Best Actress trophy for the movie “Judy.” Zellweger also emerged victorious in the same category at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild awards and London Film Critics Circle awards.
Brad Pitt (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”) and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) won the Supporting Actor trophies.
“Klaus” was named the Best Animated Feature while “Parasite” won the trophies for Original Screenplay and Best International Feature.
