KEY POINTS

  • The Seahawks could play as the next landing spot for Baker Mayfield
  • The move could affect Colin Kaepernick’s comeback aspirations
  • The Browns and Mayfield may part ways before the next NFL season gets underway

With the Cleveland Browns taking in Deshaun Watson, it appears that the Georgia native will get the starting quarterback post.

However, Baker Mayfield is still around. Rumors have it that the 26-year-old play-caller is most likely headed out of Cleveland.

The Browns acquired Watson from the Houston Texans in exchange for a plethora of draft picks in March, and the move did not sit well with Mayfield with the Texas native who learned about the deal via social media.

Browns' general manager Andrew Berry bared that he has no specific timetable to address the situation, but he added that Cleveland has the cap flexibility to keep Mayfield at least until the start of the next NFL season.

Jason La Canfora of CBS is not convinced that Berry’s statements during the NFL annual meetings this past March are on point.

For the scribe, both the Browns and Mayfield want to settle the issue as soon as possible and some teams would try to instigate a trade with the Browns--one of which could be the Seattle Seahawks.

"The Seahawks are used to having a QB without ideal size, they don't mind big personalities, Mayfield has been to the playoffs, and I don't see Pete Carroll wanting a true re-boot under center," La Canfora batted.

Given that Seattle is in search of its next play-caller, Mayfield moving to Seattle could make sense.

However, such a move could spell bad news for another player–Colin Kaepernick who has not played an NFL game since 2017.

It was also at that time when the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback began his kneeling protests, something critics feel contributed to him being left out.

Regardless, this did not stop him from trying to return to the league. Kaepernick has been working out with several Seahawks players.

As mentioned in another previous post, the Seahawks were seen as the team with the best odds of landing the two-time WAC Offensive Player of the Year.

However, this could take a different twist–especially if Mayfield does end up joining the Seahawks next season.
