  • Matheus Fernandes opens up about his Barcelona exit
  • Fernandes feels like the club didn’t treat him like a professional player
  • Another former Barca player previously expressed his frustration over the way the team had treated him

A former Barcelona midfielder is deeply offended by how the club cut him out of the team.

Matheus Fernandes only played a total of 17 minutes in his debut season with Barcelona.

Atop that, he was never presented by the club and on June 29, the Catalans decided to let him go.

Recently revealing how things went down, Fernandes exclaimed that Barcelona did not handle his departure professionally.

In fact, the Brazilian is still distressed because he felt that the club didn’t respect him at all.

“I didn’t know, and when [Barcelona] they told me I couldn’t believe it,” Fernandes told Globoesporte. “I was at home, I was going out with my wife and I received a message from the club asking if I had the same email address. I confirmed and then received it.”

“I didn’t understand it, I sent it to my manager and lawyer,” he continued. “They said it was my dismissal. Time passed and my name came out in the press. No conversation, nothing, they didn’t even call to say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’.”

“I always had the dream as a child to play for Barcelona. When I got there, they didn’t treat me as a footballer.”

Fernandes further divulged that he even let the Barcelona director know about how he feels.

For the 23-year-old, regardless of how important he is to the team, he deserved to be treated like a professional player.

“I told the director that he didn’t treat me like a professional Barcelona player,” the midfielder pointed out. “I was a Barcelona player, and I wanted to be treated like one. The other signings had a presentation and I didn’t. I was upset. Looking at it from the outside I thought one thing but when I got there they treated me differently.”

In the end, Fernandes left Barcelona on a free transfer and returned to his former club, Palmeiras.

Aside from Fernandes, former Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo was also upset about how he was treated by the famed club.

Like Fernandes, Todibo was also considered as a fringe player in Barca. He was constantly loaned out before finally being sold to Ligue 1 side Nice.

According to Todibo, Barcelona is “bogus” in real life as it doesn’t keep its promises to some players, including him.

“The presentation at Barcelona, it’s madness, but I only played five games, it’s bogus in real life,” Todibo told Spanish publication L’Equipe in March.

“[Eric] Abidal saw me as [Gerard] Piqué’s replacement,” he added. “I played two games, then Valverde told me that I was the fourth defender but that I was going to have to prove in the preseason. [Samule] Umtiti got hurt. I did the right thing, but I am not given my chance. It sucks to go to Barcelona and not play.”
