KEY POINTS

  • A slain Batman leaves Gotham City in chaos, leaving Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Robin to defend it in Warner Bros. Montreal's "Gotham Knights"
  • The game will have single-player and co-op play as the characters battle the secretive Court of Owls
  • "Gotham Knights" will not be connected to the "Arkham" series of games and is set for a 2021 release

In a world without a Batman, who can Gotham City turn to in order to protect it from malevolent forces? That is the question at the heart of Warner Bros. Montreal’s recently revealed “Gotham Knights” video game.

At the DC Fandome online event, fans of DC Comics characters and video games were presented with a city thrown into chaos. Audio from news reports announce that there has been an explosion in Gotham and that body has been found in the rubble.

Weeks of rumors and online teases of a new Batman game from Warner Bros. Montreal were finally proven true with a full trailer presented for “Gotham Knights.” The twist, though, is that Batman is taken off the board very early in the game.

One of virtual will and testament. Bruce Wayne stares straight into the camera and says, “If you’re watching this, I’m dead.” Four individuals are shown viewing this “Code Black” situation: Jason Todd a.k.a. Red Hood, Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Batgirl, Dick Grayson a.k.a. Nightwing, and Tim Drake a.k.a. Robin.

Bruce Wayne's posthumous video mentions the Belfry, a secondary hideout for the Bat-Family operated by Tim Drake and used by DC's fictional Gotham Knights. This will possibly be used as a hub for players to choose missions and objectives in the final game. We also get a look at The Court of Owls. The screen flashes with a single Talon (one of the Court of Owls’ elite assassins) jumping toward the viewer.

Inverse reports that the game will be released in 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X when it launches. Although it was developed by Warner Bros. Montreal, “Gotham Knights” is not connected to the “Arkham” series of games starring Batman.

Players can choose to play “Gotham Knights” solo or with two-player co-op mode. Unfortunately, you can’t control all four characters simultaneously and split-screen mode is also unavailable. A gameplay trailer was also released showing Batgirl in action battling Mr. Freeze.

The voice cast has also been revealed to “Gotham Knights” with Batgirl being voiced by America Young, known for portraying Barbie in “Barbie Dreamhouse Adventure.” Nightwing is voiced by Christopher Sean, known for portraying Kazuda Xiono in “Star Wars: Resistance.”

Red Hood is voiced by Stephen Oyoung, known for portraying Mr. Negative in “Marvel's Spider-Man.” Robin is voiced by Sloan Mogan Siegel, known for portraying the title role in “Dwight in Shining Armor.” Alfred is voiced by Gildart Jackson, known for narrating audiobooks.

The mere idea of a new video game with Batman was enticing enough as it is, but killing him off and having four trusted lieutenants attempting to keep Gotham City safe in his stead? That is inspired. Some might argue that it is no longer a Batman game with the Dark Knight removed, but with four people he trained reflecting different aspects of the Bat, then that is not quite as clear.
