  • DICE revealed an update on the status of the current map overhaul plans
  • The devs added terrain elevation and extra obstacles to Kaleidoscope and Renewal
  • Fans were not happy with how minor the map changes appeared to be

Disgruntled fans of the “Battlefield” franchise continue to get frustrated at DICE’s treatment of “Battlefield 2042” following a disappointing reveal of some highly-anticipated changes addressing the game’s problems with map design.

The developers revealed their progress for the planned overhauls for “Battlefield 2042’s” maps in hopes of alleviating some of the pain points the community pointed out in the past. These pain points include large swathes of open areas, un-immersive environmental design and problematic objective placements.

However, hopeful fans ended up disappointed after discovering how little the map-related changes were going to be. Reddit users pointed out the subtle changes in various posts in r/Battlefield2042, including one comparing the changes to the live versions of the Renewal and Kaleidoscope maps.

Based on the available screenshots in the latest developer post, they have added small patches of cover in previously-exposed areas in certain locations on a map. Unfortunately, players were not happy to see that such changes only involved the placement of container units and other rectangular objects in seemingly-random areas.

Users on Reddit called the developers out for the disappointing reveal since many frustrations regarding map design remained. Both Renewal and Kaleidoscope looked relatively untouched by war and the environmental apocalypse that serves as “Battlefield 2042’s” main premise, which ultimately detracts from the experience.

Players were also worried about how slow “Battlefield 2042’s” updates are getting released. Some were frustrated at how DICE took months to add containers to two out of the game’s seven core maps, while others were worried that “Battlefield 2042” might completely die out before any meaningful updates arrive.

On the other hand, DICE still has plenty of work lined up based on their dev blog. The developers planned to make each map more immersive by replacing clean and pristine environments with scenes of destruction. They also intended to add more map elements (outside of the examples they provided) to address the cover and line-of-sight issues the community pointed out.

“Battlefield 2042” is still recovering from its disastrous launch and the developers are hard at work trying to improve the experience for everybody. But players are worried that it might already be too late.
