Listeria contamination has forced the recall of about 497 pounds of beef jerky from Magnolia Provision Company.

The recalled beef jerky was produced on Aug. 25 and sold at retail locations nationwide. The recall impacts three beef jerky products from Magnolia, including:

  • 2-ounce packages of "Beef Jerky Experience Chop House Style Prime Rib Flavored Beef Jerky" with an expiration date of Aug. 25, 2023.
  • 8-ounce packages of "Beef Jerky Experience Chop House Style Prime Rib Flavored Beef Jerky" with an expiration date of Aug. 25, 2023.
  • 16-ounce packages of "Beef Jerky Experience Chop House Style Prime Rib Flavored Beef Jerky" with an expiration date of Aug. 25, 2023.

The expiration dates are listed on the back of the packages. The affected jerky products also have an establishment number of "EST 8091" located inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Labels of the recalled products can be viewed here.

Consumers are urged to check their pantries for the contaminated beef jerky as it should not be consumed. Affected products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

The Listeria contamination was discovered during third-party lab testing. Magnolia said it has not received any reports of adverse reactions due to the recall.

Listeria contamination can cause serious infections, especially in older adults, pregnant women and their unborn children, and those individuals with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of Listeria infections can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, which are sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said in the recall notice.

In some cases, Listeria infections can be serious and sometimes fatal, according to the FSIS. Anyone that is concerned about Listeria illness should seek treatment from their healthcare provider.
