Ben Affleck's 'The Accountant' To Be Made Into Trilogy, Director Gavin O'Connor Confirms
One of Ben Affleck's movies is all set to be made into a trilogy and it is not "Way Back." Director Gavin O'Connor has confirmed "The Accountant" is finally getting a sequel and it won't just end there.
O'Connor recently guested on Cinema Blend's "ReelBlend" podcast, where he confirmed the news that there won't be a "Way Back" sequel.
"But we are doing an Accountant sequel. We literally just closed that deal. We're doing 'The Accountant' again," he said.
In fact, the movie isn't simply getting a sequel, since what the director really has in mind is a trilogy. This is because Jon Bernthal's character, who turned out to be the long-lost brother of Christian Wolff, portrayed by Affleck, is supposed to play a much bigger role in the franchise's third installment. This means the second part of the trilogy will set the stage for an explosive finale.
"Yeah. Yeah. So, I've always wanted to do three because what, the second one's going to be more with – we're going to integrate his brother into the story," the director explained. "So there'll be more screen time for Bernthal in the second one. And then the third movie’s going to be, I call it, 'Rain Man on steroids.' The third movie is going to be about the two brothers, this odd couple. The third one is going be a buddy picture."
A lot has already been said about the prospects of "The Accountant 2" over the past couple of years. In 2019, Affleck spoke about the sequel, noting that "ideas were being kicked around."
Its makers even considered turning the sequel into a potential TV series. Considering O'Connor's current plans to turn it into a trilogy, a TV series would have made sense.
"The Accountant," which was released back in 2016, tells the story of Affleck's Wolff, an autistic certified public accountant who works on the books of criminal and terrorist organizations around the world. All hell breaks loose when the FBI catches on to him.
Unfortunately, O'Connor did not reveal much about the sequel during his podcast guesting. He did not even disclose when it will begin filming and who among its cast members, other than Affleck and Bernthal, will return.
