To mark the first anniversary of her album "Lemonade", singer Beyonce Knowles, announced the establishment of Formation Scholars awards for the year 2017-2018, in four colleges to encourage young women "who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident." Four schools — Berklee College of Music, Howard University, Parsons School of Design and Spelman College — are participating, out of which Howard and Spelman are historically black universities.

Each college will have one recipient for the 2017-18 academic years. Incoming, current and graduate students who are studying creative arts, music, literature or African American studies are eligible to apply.

The participating schools have shown excitement about the scholarship program. Howard University posted the news on Instagram, while Berklee College of Music's President Roger Brown called the singer a "strong and inspiring role model" in a statement, according to CNN.

Knowles has not just won hearts with her music but also with her philanthropic acts. She has contributed in a number of organizations, including the Survivor Foundation, Feeding America, the Houston Food Bank, and Chime For Change. She released a song “Stand Up For Love,” when she was chosen as the ambassador for the World Children's Day in 2005. That song has become the anthem for the annual global event, held on Nov. 20 to raise awareness and funds for children’s causes.

Even as Knowles lost the Grammy Album Of The Year award to singer Adele, her album "Lemonade" topped 2016’s charts of top-selling album in the world, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry market report issued Tuesday.

"Lemonade" was released at a time when Knowles was going through a rough patch with her husband, Jay-Z. The singer brings out her inner feelings through the songs. "Lemonade" traces a story of infidelity and reconciliation. The album also touches about the experience of black womanhood, Rolling Stone reported.
