Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’: Mathew Knowles Explains Who ‘Becky’ Is
Both Rachel Roy and Rita Ora have dismissed rumors that they’re “Becky with the good hair,” but Beyoncé’s dad claims to know who his daughter was referring to in her new concept album. In an interview published Tuesday, Mathew Knowles explained that Becky might not be a specific person.
“Let me tell you who she’s talking about,” he told E! Online of the lyric from the "Lemonade" album, which dropped Saturday night on Tidal. “She’s talking about you. You put that in context for you, personally. She’s talking about you and everybody that is you, that’s who she’s talking about.”
Knowles, who has a strained relationship with Beyoncé, wouldn’t say whether the lyrics about marriage problems and cheating were a reflection of Beyoncé and rapper husband Jay Z’s actual relationship, but did say it’s something a lot of people can relate to.
“I think that’s the beauty of her creativity and I think that’s what makes it so special, is that it relates to everyone,” he said. “Every one of us has been disappointed before and have had to go through the grieving process of anger and, you know, disappointment and then acceptance and forgiveness. And I think that’s why this again is touching so many people, because it’s universal. Everybody can relate to it.”
As previously reported, Beyoncé’s song “Sorry” included a lyric about a woman getting cheated on by someone referred to as “Becky with the good hair.” It’s believed that the song is about her own marital issues with Jay Z, but Beyoncé has yet to confirm or deny that.
The lyric caused a bit of a firestorm over the weekend, with Beyoncé fans accused fashion designer Rachel Roy and singer Rita Ora of being Becky. Both women, however, denied they were the mistress Beyoncé seemed to be singing about.
On Monday, Knowles did another interview about “Lemonade,” saying that the only person who really knows what the song lyrics are about is his daughter. “There’s no way we can get into the mind of Beyoncé,” he said during an appearance on Sirius XM’s Male It Plain (via Us Weekly). “Only Beyoncé can answer specifically who she was talking to … I would rather not get into speculation. My answer is, I don’t know.”
