'The Big Bang Theory' Season 8 Spoilers: 'Firefly' Actor Nathan Fillion To Make A Cameo In Feb. 19 Episode
“The Big Bang Theory” is no stranger to nerd-pleasing cameos. The popular CBS sitcom has had tons of star-power geeks on the show, from “Star Trek” actor Leonard Nimoy to world renowned physicist Stephen Hawking. However, an upcoming cameo in the Feb. 19 episode of Season 8 might prove to be to the most fun yet.
Entertainment Weekly has learned that the Feb. 19 episode will feature an appearance by none other than Nathan Fillion. Fillion formerly starred as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the cult sci-fi show “Firefly,” which aired on FOX from 2002 to 2003. Fillion will play himself in a restaurant where Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) recognize him and ask for a picture.
It is no secret on the show that the cast of characters are huge fans of the short-lived sci-fi show. There have been more than a few references to the Joss Whedon-created series, including the one shown below where Sheldon (Jim Parsons) criticizes Rupert Murdoch and FOX for cancelling the show after one unsuccessful season – the show has gone on to be a cult favorite amongst sci-fi fans.
Watch the “Big Bang Theory's” reference to “Firefly” below”:
While it has been more than a decade since “Firefly" was released, Fillion has not been hurting for work. The actor currently stars in the ABC procedural “Castle,” which is currently in its seventh season.
Fillion is also not the first “Firefly” cast member to appear on “The Big Bang Theory.” Summer Glau, who played the traumatized genius River Tam on “Firefly,” was featured in a 2009 episode of the CBS series playing herself.
Fans will have to wait until Feb. 19 to see Fillion’s cameo. “The Big Bang Theory" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
