Biggest Celebrity Breakups 2020: Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse And Other Couples Who Split
Although most people are looking forward to a new year of possibilities, others are ready to close the door on 2020 and never look back.
When the new year rolls around, some stars will be celebrating with a partner by their side while others will be exploring the single life.
Before ringing in the new year, take a look back at the biggest celebrity breakups of 2020:
Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse
After months of rumors alleging that the “Riverdale” stars split, Sprouse confirmed his breakup with Reinhart on Instagram in August. The actor shared a photo of his ex-girlfriend along with a caption addressing the state of their relationship.
“Lili and I initially separated in January of this year, deciding to more permanently split in March. What an incredible experience I had, I’ll always feel lucky and cherish that I had the chance to fall in love,” he wrote.
“I wish her nothing but the utmost love and happiness moving forward. All I’ll say about it, anything else you hear doesn’t matter.”
Reinhart and Sprouse dated off and on for nearly three years before they split for good this year.
Rihanna and Hassan Jameel
The Fenty Beauty founder began dating the billionaire in 2017. However, in early 2020, sources reported the couple split.
“Their lives were too different, and it was hard to maintain a relationship,” an insider told People at the time.
Rihanna previously credited Jameel with helping her establish a healthy work-life balance.
“I got into a new relationship, and it matters to me. It was like, ‘I need to make time for this.’ Just like I nurture my businesses, I need to nurture this as well,” she explained to Sarah Paulson during Interview magazine.
“I’ll shut things down for two days, three days at a time. On my calendar, we now have the infamous ‘P,’ which means personal days. This is a new thing.”
Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock
“The Voice” judge filed for divorce on June 4 after almost seven years of marriage. After filing the court documents, a source told People the split has become a bitter battle between the exes.
“Brandon’s been equally unreasonable in his requests for child and spousal support, as well as attorney fees,” the insider explained.
“Kelly’s offered to pay for all the kids’ expenses, but Brandon seems to think he is entitled to and needs $301K in spousal support and $135K in child support per month.”
If the court rules in Blackstock’s favor, he could receive around $5.2 million per year from Clarkson.
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green
Fox filed for divorce from Green in November after nearly 10 years of marriage. The two initially separated in 2019. However, Fox began a whirlwind romance with rapper Machine Gun Kelly and made it clear that she intended to make her split from Green permanent.
Sources told E! News that the breakup wasn’t amicable, and Green was “bitter” about the divorce. At the time, sources claimed the “Beverly Hills, 90210” was “constantly trying to get under her skin to get some sort of attention or reaction.”
Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis
News the couple called off their nine-year engagement first broke in November. At the time, sources told Entertainment Tonight the relationship simply ran its course.
“There was absolutely no drama or scandal, they just didn’t work as a couple anymore,” an insider revealed.
“If you’re looking for a juicy story, there just isn’t one. Of course, their kids are their number one priority and at the forefront of any decision they make.”
Wilde and Sudeikis have two children, son Otis, 6, and daughter Daisy, 4.
Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich
The two, who began dating in March, announced their engagement in July. At the time, Lovato shared a now-deleted Instagram post about the big step in their relationship.
“When I was a little girl, my birth dad always called me his ‘little partner’ - something that might’ve sounded strange without his southern cowboy like accent,” Lovato wrote in the caption of the slideshow.
“To me, it made perfect sense. And today, that word makes perfect sense again, but today I’m officially going to be someone else’s partner.”
However, on Sept. 24, sources told ET that the couple’s whirlwind romance had come to an end.
“It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” the insider revealed.
“They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.”
Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler
Hudgens and Butler split at the beginning of 2020 due to their filming schedules, according to a source.
“They’re just shooting on two different continents, and it’s a matter of distance,” an insider told E! News at the time.
However, those close to the couple, who dated for nine years, haven’t ruled out a reunion.
“They have such a history and deep connection they could find their way back to one another," the insider adds.
Scott Disick and Sofia Richie
In August, sources told People the couple had split once again. Disick and Richie previously broke up in May but began spending time together again in July.
However, once the two broke up again in August, insiders claimed Disick wanted to focus on his kids, sons, Mason and Reign, and daughter Penelope, who he shares with Kourtney Kardashian.
“It’s always been difficult for them to balance their relationship with Scott’s family life,” the source explained. “His kids will always come first.”
Meanwhile, those close to Richie revealed the model planned to focus on enjoying her newfound freedom.
“Sofia wants to hang out with friends and enjoy the summer. Since they are no longer on the same page, they decided to just be apart. At least for now,” a source said.
Rachel Bilson and Bill Hader
The actress quietly began dating Hader in late 2019, almost two years after she split with Hayden Christensen. Bilson, who dated Christensen for 10 years, shares daughter Briar Rose with her ex.
Following news of her split with Hader, sources close to Bilson told E! News the actress was “absolutely devastated” about the breakup.
Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson
Cyrus confirmed the split in August during an Instagram Live session following the release of her song “Midnight Sky.”
“For right now, two halves can’t make a whole and we’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be. Like everybody else at this age, we’re just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives,” she said.
“And so, don’t make it some drama story if next week we’re out hanging out or getting pizza. We’ve been friends for 10 years and we’re gonna continue to be friends.”
Despite insisting they would remain friends, fans noticed Cyrus and Simpson unfollowed one another on Instagram in November.
Dr. Dre and Nicole Young
Young filed for divorce from Dr. Dre in June, weeks after their 24th wedding anniversary, citing irreconcilable differences. However, the divorce proceedings quickly began to take a bitter turn when the two failed to reach an agreement regarding spousal support and their prenuptial agreement.
Young also suggested there was a possibility that the Beats founder, who was estimated to be worth $800 million in 2019, fathered children outside of their marriage.
Channing Tatum and Jessie J
Reports of a split began to circulate in April, however, James didn’t publicly address the breakup until October 20. At the time, she shared an Instagram post reflecting on being “single” during the pandemic.
A source previously told E! News the two split weeks after Tatum’s birthday, which was on April 26. The breakup was reportedly amicable because the stars realized they were “better off as friends.”
“They love and care about each other,” an insider revealed, but the romance didn’t work out.
