The final day of the year offers Hollywood the chance to close the door on 2021 and celebrate new projects once the clock strikes midnight. However, some celebrities won’t get the opportunity to promote their work following their untimely deaths.

Although they may be gone, their contributions won’t be forgotten. Below is a look back at some of the celebrities who died in 2021.

DMX

Born Earl Simmons, the rapper died at the age of 50 on April 9 after suffering a heart attack. Throughout his career, DMX earned Grammy nominations for several songs.

Virgil Abloh

The 41-year-old fashion designer died following a private battle with cancer. Abloh was diagnosed with cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare cancer that can cause a tumor in the heart. Abloh’s death was announced on Nov. 28 by the luxury group Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy.

Helen McCrory

On April 16, the death of the “Peaky Blinders” actress was announced on Twitter by her husband Damian Lewis. “She died as she lived. Fearlessly,” Lewis wrote. “God, we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.” She was 52.

Cicely Tyson

Throughout her career, Tyson earned three Emmy awards, a Peabody award, and a Tony. Tyson, who appeared in “How to Get Away with Murder,” “The Help,” and other projects, died on Jan. 28. A cause of death was not released. She was 96.

Larry King

The renowned television and radio host died on Jan. 23 at the age of 87. Although he had battled COVID-19 near the time of his death, it was later announced that King died from sepsis and two other underlying conditions.

Markie Post

The actress was 70 years old when she lost her nearly four-year battle with cancer in August. Post was known for her roles on several shows, including “Chicago P.D.,” “The Fall Guy,” and “Night Court.”

Halyna Hutchinson

The cinematographer died on Oct. 21 while she was working on the set of the western movie “Rust.” At the time, a prop gun held by the film’s star Alec Baldwin went off and fatally wounded Hutchinson. She was 42.

Thea White

The actress, who voiced Muriel on the Cartoon Network series “Courage the Cowardly Dog,” died July 30 following a battle with liver cancer. She was 81.

Prince Philip

On April 9, Buckingham Palace confirmed the death of Queen Elizabeth’s husband in a statement. “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” it read. Prince Philip was 99.

Dustin Diamond

The actor, who was best-known for playing Screech on the 1990s TV series “Saved by the Bell,” died on Feb. 1 from carcinoma. Diamond’s rep released a statement confirming his death and battle with cancer. Diamond was 44.

“He was diagnosed with this brutal, relentless form of malignant cancer only three weeks ago. In that time, it managed to spread rapidly throughout his system,” Diamond’s spokesperson said in the statement.

“The only mercy it exhibited was its sharp and swift execution. Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful.”

Robert Downey Sr.

The father of actor Robert Downey Jr. was famous for his work on various projects, including “Matlock” and “The Twilight Zone.” Downey Sr. died July 7 at the age of 85 after battling Parkinson’s disease for several years.

Colin Powell

Powell, who made history as the first Black Secretary of State, died on Oct. 18 after suffering complications from COVID-19. He was 84.

Willie Garson

The actor, who was known for his role as Stanford Blatch on the HBO series “Sex and the City,” died on Sept. 21 following a private battle with pancreatic cancer.
