Biggest Rap Feuds Of 2017: Kanye West Vs JAY-Z Beef And More
As we prepare to bid 2017 farewell, we can’t forget to acknowledge all of the major drama that went down throughout the year. Celebrities arguing with one another is always entertaining but the rap beefs that took place this year were nail-biting showdowns that you just couldn’t ignore.
Check out the biggest rap feuds of 2017 below.
1. Kanye West vs. JAY-Z
They started out as the best of friends who produced hit after hit while representing Roc Nation, but towards the end of 2016, Kanye had nothing but resentment for JAY-Z. During his Seattle concert in October 2016, Kanye called out JAY-Z for failing to stop by his house to check on him after his wife, Kim Kardashian, was robbed at gunpoint in Paris. West was also offended that his daughter, North, and JAY-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy have never played together.
The following month, the rapper accused JAY-Z’s wife, Beyoncé, of refusing to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards unless her video “Formation” won, which it did. Fast forward to July 2017, West left Tidal over a reported money dispute, and by the next month, JAY-Z commented about their falling out on the “Rap Radar” podcast. During his interview, he stated that his longtime pal crossed the line by bringing his family into their feud.
However, in November, the “4:44” artist told T: The New York Times Style Magazine that he has spoken to West, but admitted that there is still tension between the two and that they are overdue for a much-needed conversation.
2. Chris Brown vs. Soulja Boy
Chris Brown isn’t technically a rapper, but this feud quickly became the topic of conversation in the world of hip-hop. The R&B singer and rapper kicked off the new year with an epic social media feud that started over Brown’s ex-girlfriend, Karrueche Tran. The drama started at the beginning of January, when Soulja Boy shared several tweets dissing Brown.
Later on, in a video, the rapper revealed the “Privacy” singer called him after he commented on Tran’s Instagram photos. Things quickly spiraled out of control with multiple threats, until the two decided to settle their differences in the ring with a boxing match. However, not long after agreeing to the brawl, Brown bowed out of the match and the public lost interest in the feud.
3. Migos vs. Joe Budden
The drama between the Atlanta rap trio and the New York rapper began at the BET Awards in June. Budden and his “Everyday Struggle” co-hosts were interviewing the rap trio, when DJ Akademiks asked Takeoff if he was bitter about being left off of the group’s hit song “Bad and Boujee.” Takeoff took offense to the comment, insisting he wasn’t left off of the song. Budden then told them to wrap up the interview and walked out on the music group, which caused the trio to stand up. A brief altercation ensued.
In December, Migos member Quavo teamed up with Lil Yachty, who also has issues with Budden, for a record called, “Ice Tray.” Although Budden seemed to be ok with the diss record, in the music video, the duo mercilessly mocked the rapper, making it clear that their feud was far from over.
4. Nicki Minaj vs. Remy Ma
In February, Nicki Minaj was featured on Gucci Mane’s song “Make Love,” where she ignited an epic feud between herself and fellow New York rapper Remy Ma. In the song, Nicki crowned herself the queen of rap and subtly shaded Remy by calling her out for her lack of record sales. Remy fired back by releasing her diss record “ShETHER,” and followed up by releasing “Another One,” just days later, shading Minaj once again.
Remy then trolled Minaj for not releasing a diss record right away and eventually, Minaj put out “No Frauds,” which quickly climbed up the charts while throwing several jabs at her rival. The ladies continued to go back and forth throughout the year, dissing each other through social media, interviews and tracks. In October, Remy began teasing a collaboration with Lil Kim, in which she once again began shading Minaj. By December, fans began to speculate whether Minaj would diss Remy on her new album, after Trina revealed that there is a “crazy”song on the upcoming EP.
5. Meek Mill Vs. Drake And Nicki Minaj
In the beginning of 2017, Minaj announced that she and Meek Mill had split, and not long after that, the “Motorsport” rapper shared a photo of herself reuniting with Young Money labelmate Drake, after previously ending their friendship over Meek Mill. Along with “No Frauds,” which featured Lil Wayne and Drake, Minaj also released “Regret In Your Tears,” addressing her failed relationship with the Philly rapper.
In May, Meek Mill released “$Lay,” which dissed his ex-girlfriend and her label mate. Along with giving props to her rival Remy Ma, the MMG rapper also shaded Drake by referencing rumors that he doesn’t write his own verses, and taunted the rapper, forcing Minaj to end their friendship. However, by November, the feud seemed to be water under the bridge on Drake’s end, because the rapper wore a “Free Meek Mill” shirt during a performance, following the rapper’s arrest for violating his probation.
6. Cam’ron vs. Mase
Following a more than decade-long beef between the former high school basketball teammates, Mase sparked another feud with Cam’ron in November, when he released his diss record, “The Oracle.” Although Cam’ron has denied the two are feuding, Mase made a comment on Funkmaster Flex’s Instagram, revealing that the two are not cool with one another. On Twitter, he stated that Cam’ron’s “Dinner Time” diss record was “trash” and that he was the winner in their rap battle.
At the end of the month, Cam’ron appeared on The Breakfast Club and said that he and Mase were no longer friends, because he disagrees with the way the rapper has jumped back and forth between rap music and preaching about God.
7. Migos vs. XXXTentacion
The Atlanta trio is never afraid of a fight, and had no problem carrying out a feud with XXXTentacion during 2017. The drama started in April, when Offset responded to X’s comments from February, about how one of Drake’s songs from “More Life” shared some similarities with his record “Look at Me.” Offset said that he didn’t understand how “unheard” of artists could accuse famous musicians of stealing their swag.
The beef continued in May, when Offset slammed rappers who wore upside-down crosses, which is a symbol associated with the occult. X then accused the rapper of spending his time hating on artists who are just trying to make it the music industry, rather than helping them be successful. By November, X was trolling Migos on social media after he was jumped by three men who favored the rap group members, and accused the trio of brutally attacking him. After learning Quavo, Offset and Takeoff were not responsible for the attack, he issued an apology, but continued to troll Offset and even took shots at his now-fiancée Cardi B.
