KEY POINTS

  • "Dragonflight" will have six content patches in 2023
  • The updates will contain new zones, items, features and more
  • Blizzard will improve game systems according to feedback from the community

The latest expansion for Blizzard's titanic "World of Warcraft" MMO was met with generally positive reviews, but the developers admitted feeling a need to do better.

"Dragonflight" was released late in November and gave the "WoW" crowd a boatload of stuff to experience; a new region, an extra playable race and the addition of the titular dragon mounts were all at the expansion's forefront ahead of the new items and dungeons that players could explore.

Beyond the positive critical reception were mixed opinions from the fanbase, ranging from scathing reviews to tempered criticism. In light of this, the game developers said they'll be working on relieving some pain points while also adding substantial content to the aging MMO.

Six content patches will be released in evenly-spaced intervals throughout 2023, as per Blizzard's most recent roadmap blog post. Two of these will be major updates that contain the usual array of new areas, raids and seasonal rewards. Meanwhile, the rest of the content drops will feature smaller additions like narrative updates, new world events and upgrades to the game's systems.

"Our goal for 'Dragonflight' is that there should always be something right around the corner, with a new update hitting our test realms shortly after the last one is live and in your hands," said executive producer Holly Langdale. Additionally, she mentioned adding gameplay elements based on direct player feedback.

In the 10.0.5 patch, which is arriving early next year, players can expect to see a new Trading Post system focusing on cosmetic rewards, including the option to use poor and common-quality items as transmog options. Repeatable world content and the continuation of the expansion's story are on the way as well.

Many user complaints about the expansion revolved around bugs, bad class balance and re-used character models for the Evoker class. Others also expressed disappointment over the tedious endgame grind, limited customization options and the racial/faction-based segregation issue still present now.

"Dragonflight" is expected to evolve as player feedback is implemented into the game's systems. Those unsure whether to purchase this expansion can try out a free trial version, assuming they have an active subscription or spare "World of Warcraft" game time on their accounts.
