Bloomberg Scraps Plan to Cut Bars and Liquor Stores
Close call on those convenient last calls.
Almost as quickly as the story appeared in the media, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg rescinded his proposal to cut the number of drinking establishments in the city.
Stu Loeser, a spokesman for the mayor, said Bloomberg supports the goal of reducing binge drinking and illegal alcohol sales to minors, through PSAs and other community initiatives, according to the New York Post.
One reason the mayor has been successful in office is because we think there are no bad ideas in brainstorming--and then we weigh them against other concerns. We're deeply committed to encouraging entrepreneurs to start and expand small businesses in the city, Loeser said, according to the New York Post.
The Health Department sought to reduce the density of alcohol establishments through its Partnership for a Healthier New York.
