A 36-year-old woman has been charged with the murders of her two children after their lifeless bodies were found in the backseat of her car.

The gruesome deaths came to light when cops from Hillsborough Township responded to a 911 call Tuesday about a car that had driven off the roadway, according to New York Post.

The vehicle was first spotted at 7.41 am by a tow truck driver, who frantically called his dad, Robert Long, to tell him about the same.

“He was shook up. He said he found a lady in the ditch and said he asked her if she was all right and she said no, I think. And then he seen the babies and then he called the cops right away,” Long said, as per CBS New York.

When the cops arrived, they found Yuhwei Chou, 36, with her two children, Samantha Ross, 7, and 10-month-old infant, Paul Ross, in the backseat of the car. Samantha was in a booster seat, while Paul was in a baby chair.

“The Officers observed two children secured in a booster seat and a baby seat in the back seat of the vehicle. Officers observed that the children were bound and restrained. No vital signs were present on the children and they were pronounced deceased at the scene,” investigators said in a news release.

A source with direct knowledge of the investigation confirmed to NBC New York that one or both of the children were bound with duct tape, over their eyes and mouth. The source also added that there were no obvious injuries or wounds spotted on the children's bodies.

Though a medical examiner is yet to conduct an autopsy and officially rule what the cause of death was, both children are believed to have died of suffocation.

Though the investigation indicates that Chou was responsible for killing her children, a motive is yet to be determined. The woman has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

However, a second source mentioned that there were a lot of domestic issues between Chou and her husband, who was at work when the vehicle with his children's bodies was discovered.

The news of the death has shaken up neighbor Helen Bailey who wondered if the outcome would have been different if she'd done something. “What could I have done? What could I have said?” Bailey said. “Why did she do that?” Bailey added, crying. “I never even saw the little boy. I understand he was a beautiful little boy. The girl... she was a beautiful little girl. The cutest little thing.”

Until medical clearance is given from a local hospital, Chou will be held in the Somerset County Jail till her bail detention hearing.
