KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool are on the top of the Premier League table
  • Klopp's side is set to face Leicester City Friday
  • Liverpool lost the title to Man City  last season by only a point

Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Manchester City have “moved the bar massively” and The Reds must match if they want to win the Premier League title.

Klopp’s side, who are 10 points clear currently on the points table, are yet to win the coveted trophy. They came close to finally breaking the jinx last season but fell short by only a point.

Reigning champions Man City, across the last two seasons, have picked up as many as 198 points under Pep Guardiola and five trophies, including a domestic treble the previous season – Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Klopp and Co had an excellent run in 2018-19 season where they scored 97 points in the Premier League but courtesy of Man City’s run of being unbeaten in 14 consecutive towards the end, Liverpool had to settle as the runner’s up.

In the ongoing 2019-20 season, Liverpool are yet to lose a match in the Premier League as they have won 16 out of the 17 matches along with the lone draw against arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. With a lead of 11 points over Man City, Liverpool are on the top of the table ahead of their Boxing Day fixture against Leicester City on Friday.

If the Premier League leaders win at the King Power Stadium, they will move 13 points clear on the top ahead of Man City’s match against Wolves later in the day. However, Liverpool manager Klopp has suggested that his team’s task will be more difficult than ever to win the Premier League trophy this season.

“I think City have moved the bar massively, massively. The kind of consistency they showed in the last three years is incredible and difficult, very difficult to do. So they became champions two years ago and last year we helped a lot and they helped us as a lot we tried to catch up with them. They did it in an incredible way. It has changed, it is not allowed to lose games anymore. It is difficult, obviously, but winning the Premier League should be difficult, it is such a strong league with all the teams you see now,” Klopp said at a press conference on the eve of Liverpool’s Boxing Day match.

"Watford looked like they were gone, relegated, but Nigel Pearson comes in, they changed their manager, came to Anfield and did a good performance and then won the next week (against Manchester United) and everyone down there is on their toes again. Now everyone is fighting for every point they can get, which makes it difficult. It looked like the top four were already gone for a while and then all of a sudden seven or eight teams will fight for being in the Champions League and Europa League."

"You have to be ready every three days to kind of win a football game. We know that, so don't think about the last game we won, we don’t think about the one after the next one, we think only about the next one. With all the problems and difficulties we face, that is pretty much a plan and sometimes it works out. That is what we do,” the German manager added.
