- Floyd Mayweather beat Canelo via Majority Decision in 2013
- Canelo insisted that he will make the fight happen for the business
An MMA fighter going to the squared circle is not a new sight for boxing fans and if both parties agree to make the fight happen, we might just see another one – regardless if it is a lopsided one, an upset, or a perfect match.
That match-up is what Mexican boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has in mind.
An interview by TMZ Sports caught up the 29-year old slugger from Guadalajara walking around Los Angeles. When asked about fighting the current BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal in a boxing match, Canelo had a curt reply – “For business, why not?”
Perhaps the most popular cross-match of an MMA fighter and a boxer battling each other was the fight between Conor McGregor and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in 2017. McGregor went home with $100-million dollars while Mayweather brought at least $300-million to his bank account.
Right now, the two fighters don’t a fight coming up and this gives the people a chance to witness another MMA-boxing crossover match should the two take the idea seriously.
Asserting his mastery of the sport, Floyd beat McGregor via TKO in the tenth round as “The Notorious” started to gasp for air and Mayweather took advantage of the situation. The win was Mayweather’s 50th victory and still undefeated.
When asked about the possibility of fighting the 42-year old Mayweather, Canelo was also open to the idea but vowed to end the fight with a different result. "I was very young and experienced at the time and now I'm a different fighter,” said the four-division world champion. “It will be a totally different result."
Mayweather faced a young Canelo in 2013 which resulted in a majority decision victory for Floyd’s win number 45 and for the unified welterweight title. The fight, however, was marred by controversy when a judge scored the bout at 114-114 while the two others had it 117-111 and 116-112. The score drew the ire of the undefeated boxer, who was accompanied to the ring by Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber. “I thought it was a joke,” said the then 36-year old Mayweather.
Mayweather announced his return via Instagram and is looking to fight twice in 2020, both in the ring and in the octagon.
