One of Manny Pacquiao’s most notable past opponents has sent Errol Spence Jr. a stern warning ahead of the pair’s highly-anticipated bout.
Moments before sitting down with Mike Tyson for a recent appearance on the “Hot Boxin'” podcast, Oscar De La Hoya shared an interesting insight about the upcoming Pacquiao vs. Spence bout.
According to De La Hoya, who suffered a corner stoppage loss to Pacquiao in 2008, pointed out that Spence should be “careful” of the Filipino boxer’s raising of both hands.
Based on the Olympic gold medalist’s assessment, the said Pacquiao move signals a power punch or a flurry of blows coming and “The Truth” should really watch out for it.
“I love that fight and it’s a great match-up,” De La Hoya told EsNews of Pacquiao vs. Spence. “I think [Errol] Spence is a great fighter. I think Spence, as great as he is, I think he has to be careful with… Manny has that little [hands raised move]. When he goes like this (hands raised), you know he’s gonna throw [a punch]. He goes like this (hand raised) and then he throws.”
“He’s gotta be careful with that, but I love Spence and it’s gonna be a great fight,” he added.
Like De La Hoya, former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito also had the height and size advantage over Pacquiao, but both of them were obliterated by the eight-division titlist.
Spence is no different as aside from the age difference, the undefeated champ is four inches taller than Pacquiao.
However, Margarito is certain the older “Pac-Man” will still prevail.
"[Pacquiao] just moves way too much and the truth is he's just too fast," Margarito recently told Fight Hype. "The truth is I was gonna fight him I always mention that like, 'You know what, he can throw six punches to my one punch.' But when I catch him and to catch him turned out to not be so easy, so the truth is it really ended up being seven to eight punches to my one punch. So really he was just way too fast."
"He's still really ready for this," he continued. "I say it after retiring from boxing many years, yes the years do add up but experience really counts a lot. Manny Pacquiao still is an excellent fighter, I'm going with Pacquiao."
Pacquiao vs. Spence is scheduled to happen on August 21st at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
