Boxing News: Will Canelo Alvarez Fight GGG Again? A Third Fight Could Happen In 2022

One of the world’s best boxers may be set for another bout with his greatest rival. Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are expected to fight on Sept. 17 as part of Alvarez’s new multi-fight deal.

According to ESPN, Alvarez has agreed to face light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7. If Alvarez beats Bivol, he’ll have a trilogy fight with Golovkin at 168 pounds.

Golovkin must also take care of business in a fight before the highly anticipated rematch. The knockout artist will take on Ryōta Murata in a middleweight championship fight on April 9.

Alvarez, who is among the best pound-for-pound boxers, is undefeated in 16 fights since losing to Floyd Mayweather as a 23-year-old in 2013. Alvarez’s only blemish since that defeat was a controversial draw against Golovkin in September 2017.

After many viewers felt that Golovkin got the better of Alvarez, the two boxers had a rematch in September 2018. Alvarez handed Golovkin his first-ever defeat as a pro, winning by majority decision in another highly questionable result.

Since the rematch, Golovkin has fought only three times, winning each bout. Golovkin remains an elite boxer despite his relative lack of activity since his second fight with Alvarez. The Kazakh did not fight in all of 2021.

Alvarez has gone 7-0 during that span, earning titles in three different weight classes.

Alvarez last fought on Nov. 6, defeating Caleb Plant with an 11th-round technical knockout. Golovkin defeated Kamil Szeremeta in December 2020.

Only seven of Golovkin’s 43 career fights have gone the distance. In 60 fights, Alvarez has 39 victories by knockout.

Both fights between Alvarez and Golovkin generated more than one million pay-per-view buys. The 2018 rematch was responsible for the fourth-biggest live gate for boxing in the history of Nevada.

Alvarez’s new three-fight deal is worth up to $160 million, ESPN reports.
