  • ACLU voiced support for Britney Spears amid her conservatorship battle
  • The "Lucky" singer wants to make her manager her permanent conservator instead of her father
  • Twitter users have mixed opinions on the ACLU's move to support Britney

Britney Spears has received the support of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) amid her ongoing conservatorship battle and following her request to drop her dad as her sole conservator.

The pop princess wants to make her longtime care manager Jodi Montgomery her permanent conservator. She also wants to remove her dad as the sole handler of her finances, but her request hasn't been granted yet. The ACLU recently voiced its support for the "Baby One More Time" singer amid the case.

"People with disabilities have a right to lead self-directed lives and retain their civil rights," the ACLU wrote on Twitter.

"If Britney Spears wants to regain her civil liberties and get out of her conservatorship, we are here to help her."

The ACLU has been around for 100 years already. It started as a small group of idealists and became the nation's premier defender of rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Based on its website, it already has 1.5 million members and nearly 300 staff attorneys and thousands of volunteer attorneys and offices throughout the country.

However, the netizens have mixed opinions on the ACLU’s willingness to help the singer. Some of them agreed that Britney needs help while others support the idea of her dad, Jamie Spears, being her sole conservator.

"IDK. As the close relative of someone who needs to have a conservatorship, maybe stay out of issues where the person being protected has a history of mental health issues... You would likely do her more harm than good," one commented.

"If the disability is inability to be responsible, then conservatorship protects her. I have a couple of disabilities, but I able to be responsible enough... maybe barel," another added.

One defended Britney and stressed that the "Lucky" hitmaker is mentally stable. The fan pointed out that the artist has been working and has released several albums all along the conservatorship issue.

"If she was mentally unable like that, she wouldn't be working normally and having her kids shared custody with her ex husband. All of that proves there's no need of a conservatorship," another added.

Spears does not want to end the conservatorship that started in 2008. She just wants to change it and have her dad dropped from the conservatorship.

Meanwhile, Jamie recently asked the Hollywood star’s fans to stop meddling with the issue because it’s a “family matter.”
