BTS' RM, Pharrell Williams Confirm Upcoming Collaboration Track, Discuss Pressures Of Fame
The secret is out. The two biggest names in the music industry — BTS and Pharrell Williams — have teamed up for a new song.
The upcoming track was recorded remotely by BTS for volume 1 of William's upcoming album, "Phriends."
The song was confirmed by the boy band's leader, RM, and Williams in their conversation for Rolling Stone's November 2022 cover story, where they also discussed how they deal with the pressures that come with fame.
"You guys [BTS] are on there, obviously...it's a song from my album that [BTS] sang and it's amazing, and I'm super grateful," Williams told RM.
"I just love this song," RM said, and the 49-year-old "Happy" singer responded, "I love it too. Everyone that hears it is like, 'Whoa.'"
Aside from discussing their secret collaboration project, RM, also known as Kim Namjoon, also talked about his upcoming solo album, which is his first solo work. Prior to this, RM released two mixtapes — "RM" and "Mono" in 2015 and 2018, respectively.
"You said you're 90 percent done with your solo album. But if within that last 10 percent, if you need — if you want to do something, we can actually do it," Williams told RM.
"I always needed you, for 15 years," RM said in response to Williams, whom he called his "own idol," before adding, "I'm honored and grateful."
During their conversation, RM also recalled being a "small rapper" and performing in front of 10 people in a small club where he forgot most of the lyrics of the song. Now he is a musical superstar adored by many fans all over the world, and he wants to give back to his supporters.
"So it fills me like I have to pay back. I have to offer them the best night ever in their lives...But I try to deal with it because I love the music. I love their love," RM said.
For Williams, however, the adulation could be too much sometimes.
"It's too heavy, man. It's too much of a responsibility. That's why I really revere people like yourself and your band members and other artists like Bey and Jay and even Kanye — like, man, what y'all go out there and go face every night on that stage? It is humbling and it's overwhelming," he explained.
