Burglar Returns To Crime Scene After Threatening Victims Online, Finds Police Waiting For Him
A burglar who allegedly forced his way into a Kentucky home and had a physical altercation with its occupants before leaving with a stolen gun reportedly returned to the crime scene — only to find the police waiting for him.
Errich Schmidt, 32, was accused of kicking down the front door of a house on Evansdale Ave. early Saturday. Armed with a knife, the suspect allegedly made his way upstairs and fought with three people, one of whom had a 9 mm Taurus handgun. He managed to wrestle the handgun out of the person's hands, Richmond Register reported. A shot was fired from the gun during the struggle.
Schmidt remained at the room's doorway for several seconds, according to the witnesses. After stealing some medication from the house, the suspect allegedly left with the gun.
The three victims then contacted Richmond Police Department, which responded at around 5 a.m. and spoke to them at the scene. As the police were conducting their investigation, Schmidt Facetimed one of the victims and threatened to kill them using the stolen handgun, Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
"While police were investigating the robbery, Mr. Schmidt contacted the victims via social media and threatened to return to the residence to use the stolen handgun on them," Richmond Police Department said in a statement released on Facebook.
The officers then waited for Schmidt's arrival at the scene and confronted him there. The suspect did not leave his vehicle as the cops spoke to him. He had the stolen handgun on his lap, but did not use it throughout the standoff between him and the cops.
As negotiations ensued, Schmidt confessed to forcing his way into the house, threatening the occupants with a knife in his hand and firing a shot from the handgun that he stole.
The police said it took about two hours before Schmidt surrendered. He was then taken into custody and was currently facing multiple charges, such as first-degree robbery, first-degree terroristic threatening, three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree assault, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and resisting arrest and theft of legend drug.
A background check on Schmidt revealed he was a convicted felon. He was reportedly indicted on 64 counts, which included 20 counts of first-degree rape, 11 counts of first-degree sodomy, 31 counts of incest, first-degree sexual abuse and the use of an electronic device to procure a minor for sex.
