Busy Philipps Opens Up About Her Experience Of Being A Mother To A Queer Child

Busy Philipps, who refers to her 13-year-old daughter Birdie as they/them since they came out as a queer in 2020, opened up about her experience in the past year, ET reported.

The 42-year-old actress praised her eldest kid for being confident enough to share their real personality with the world. Philipps recalled how Birdie encouraged Philipps to talk to her regarding queerness and pronouns on her podcast, titled "Busy Philipps is Doing Her Best."

While Philipps praised Birdie, she also noted how she was prepared for the world to be unkind to her child.

"They're kind of always unfazed by everything, in terms of how people have responded," Philipps told the outlet. "It was hard for me in terms of knowing that there would be people that would be unkind to my child."

The actress further explained how she felt that her child might be at risk if she discusses Birdie on a public platform. "I felt like I was putting my kid out there, and putting them at risk of getting some of that negativity toward who they are as a person," she added.

Philipps revealed that she got over her concern after Birdie explained to her that not everyone is going to be nice about her sexuality.

"Mom, you thought everybody was going to be real nice about it? No, this is the world we live in," Philipps recalled what Birdie told her. "I'm so glad you did it because... I don't have to explain myself over and over again to people. You did me a favor."

Philipps also noted how she used to receive "horrible DMs" on her Instagram. "But who cares?" she added.

Besides negative messages, the "Made of Honor" star noted that she received way too many letters and messages from mothers over the last year, thanking her for talking about her child's queerness and pronouns.

The actress noted that those mothers also share the same concern but they are living in a small town due to which they can't open up about this. She believes her discussion with Birdie on her podcast helps these mothers to have an easier conversation with their own queer kids.

Philipps revealed in December 2020 that her daughter is gay. Besides Birdie, Philipps also has an 8-year-old daughter with her husband Marc Silverstein.
