A family from California was found safe Wednesday after pirates attacked their boat in the Amazon River earlier this week. Adam and Emily Harteau, along with their 3 and 7-year-old daughters, had been missing since Sunday.

Adam and Emily went to South America in 2012 for a one year traveling stint that turned into a long-term stay. The pair chronicled their journey on a travel blog called “Our Open Road.” Along with their children Colette and Sierra, Adam and Emily were living in the southern Brazilian city of Florianopolis, but were set to head back to Los Angeles later in November to “get a little bit of foundation.”

The Harteau family was on their way to the small city of Breves in Brazil Sunday when men armed with guns boarded the boat they were on. The pirates forced the craft to head toward the city of Porto dos Dias, where they were held hostage and robbed before the gunmen fled, according to Sergio Chene, a spokesman for the Public Safety Department in Para, Brazil.

It remained unclear how the family got away. When police arrived at the scene, the Harteau’s were missing.

“Me knowing Adam, he probably took it upon himself to save his family,” Colby Guillory, a spokesperson for the family, told the Associated Press. “We just know that sometime between the pirates overtaking the boat and leaving the boat, [the Harteau’s] went missing. We think they jumped.”

A fisherman apparently found the family after they had been in the jungle for a few days. The family was taken to a Breve for a medical examination, state police confirmed to the Wall Street Journal. All four appeared to have insect bites and scratches but no serious injuries.

"We just can't wait to have them home," said Guillory.
