A California man has been arrested for attempting to drown his wife in the ocean and then trying to bury her alive in the sand at one of the state's beaches.
The unidentified woman called the police Wednesday evening and informed them that her husband had tried to kill her while they were at Coronado Beach. Officers arrived at the 900 block of Ocean Boulevard and found the badly injured woman on a sidewalk, the City Of Coronado Police Department said in a statement.
Police believe the couple reached the beach earlier in the evening and got into an argument during their stay there. The victim's husband, Jose Luis Mares III, 23, started attacking her, tried to throw her in the ocean before digging a hole in the sand and forcefully lowering her there, the statement added.
The victim managed to escape and ran to a nearby sidewalk, where a passerby helped her. Paramedics treated her at the scene and she was transported to a trauma center in San Diego.
The suspect, who ran off from the spot, was later located in the backyard of a nearby home. He is charged with attempted murder, assault causing great bodily injury, domestic violence, false imprisonment and parole violation, authorities said in the statement.
Coronado is a tourist destination located on a peninsula in San Diego County. The location has many resorts that are frequently flocked by visitors from across the nation.
In January, a North Carolina man was charged with attempted murder after he stabbed his estranged wife several times before pushing her off the balcony. Mathew Stallings, of New Hanover County, was accused of breaking into the woman's apartment while she was asleep and stabbing her at least 15 times. The woman, Elaine Kinn, fell 14 feet to the ground and was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
