A woman was found alive by rescue officials in California after her car plummeted down a cliff more than 100 feet high, and fell onto the beach below on Christmas morning.
The incident took place in San Francisco’s Fort Funston, an area which is protected within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the San Francisco Fire Department said in a tweet.
On arrival, rescue officials found the vehicle has rolled down more than 100 feet below on the beach. They found the female occupant of the car in a stable condition, The Mercury News reported.
The unidentified woman was taken to a trauma center, where she was listed in serious condition. Firefighters said on Twitter she suffered severe injuries in the accident.
Photos from the scene showed the car got flipped over after it came to a halt on the beach, and emergency responders tending to the victim. It was, however, unclear if the woman was the driver of the vehicle or if other people were present in the car at the time of the accident.
No details about how the vehicle careened off the cliff were released.
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area thanked first responders and asked beachgoers to avoid the accident site for the next few days as officials work to remove the wrecked vehicle.
Fort Funston is home to sandy cliffs as high as 200-feet, towering over the Pacific Ocean along San Francisco’s southwest coast. It is a popular recreational area for hiking and paragliding enthusiasts and has been a common site of rescues.
In September, a father and his young child were rescued by officials after they became trapped while trying to climb down a cliff and into the Pacific Ocean below.
In September 2019, a woman miraculously survived what could have been a fatal fall from an 80-foot-tall cliff. The 28-year-old unidentified woman from Minnesota was loitering around the side of the cliff at the Palisades State Park, South Dakota, before the fall. She apparently tried to jump from the rocks into the water. Rescue officials pulled her out from the water and took her to the hospital for treatment. The woman sustained minor injuries.
